Anticipation of epileptic seizures from Surface Brain Signals


Researchers of the medical engineering deportment of TMU managed to develop a comprehensive method for the anticipation of epileptic seizures from surface brain signals.

Epileptic seizure or fit is a brief episode of signs or symptoms due to abnormal excessive or synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. Epileptic seizures may be caused by brain tumor, brain damage, oxygen deficiency or Encephalitis.

Saber Habibi, an M.A. graduate, who has conducted this research as a part of his master thesis added: "nowadays more than 65 million people in the world suffer from epilepsy, so developing a method to anticipate future seizure can prevent or reduce possible injuries”. He further pointed to the use of electroencephalograms (EEGs) as a commonly used method to anticipate epileptic seizures and said: "our proposed method is much more reliable compared with similar studies which were not reliable due to the diversity of epileptic seizures, short-term nature of recordings and lack of statistical assessment”.

“To overcome the constraints, the new method makes use of surface electroencephalogram signals on the basis of pre-epileptic and non-epileptic conditions. Fuzzy entropy is a standard used to measure signal irregularity. Former studies used this feature for the analysis of various vital signals such as ECG, EMG and also for the anticipation of epileptic seizures”. He added. In this method, fuzzy entropy is used for the anticipation of epileptic seizure.

This research which was conducted as a part of M.A degree was supervised by Dr. Mohammad Zadeh, faculty member of Electrical Engineering and Computer Faculty.
